Rosetta Stone - Taalcursus

After all these years speech recognition is still NOT working. I use Apple AirPods Pro but the app doesn’t use the AirPods Pro build in microphones and the iPad microphones also don’t work unless you scream. Technical support said: use wired headphones/mic!?! This is 2024, can you believe this answer?

Ik kan nu zo makkelijk Chinees of Japans leren! Elke dag een korte les van maar 30min! en je leert er ook echt iets van!

On 14 Aug 2024 I bought the subscription for 3 month by the Apple Store. The app was working good, but two days ago something happened and now all lessons are locked again and the app offers me to get the full acces. When I clicked on “Get full access” the system gave “Error” message. And then I’ve tried to call the help desk in UK, but there was a voicemail that “The service is unavailable in my calling area”. I also have sent an email… but when I will receive an answer? Over 2,5 months is my subscription already expired. So what for did I pay 39,99 euro?! Disappointed.

Blij dat ik de proefperiode heb. Zou nooit geld hier aan uitgeven. Continue foutmelding dat mijn microfoon niet goed werkt, terwijl dit een splinternieuwe telefoon is. Maakt niet uit of ik hem bijna in mn mond zet of een meter van me af. Blijf die melding krijgen. Jammer!

It’s absolutely ridiculous. You can’t be logged in on you iPad and your iPhone at the same time. You can only be logged in on 1 device. Even though both devices have the same iCloud account. Are we back in 1995? Incredible that you guys can’t solve a simple issue like this, Rosetta Stone. I’m not going to be extending my subscription any more after it expires. And you can’t even file a support ticket, only check the knowledge base. This app sucks.

Wat een fijne app die je snel leert een taal te spreken. Alle devices linken aan elkaar waardoor je altijd en overal verder kan met lessen.

I use it on my iPad, I can't complete some parts despite having done the whole assignment correctly, and then I also can't go to the following lesson. Quite annoying.

Rosetta Stone feels like 2015 software. If they won't come ahead with the time, this company will be a fossil soon. Add Whisper support for sound recognition, as an example. It's so bad right now.

Best bruikbare en prettige App. Er zitten nog wel wat schoonheidsfoutjes in: bij sommige lesjes blijft de app ‘hangen’ op een iPad ook nadat je alles herhaaldelijk 100% goed hebt afgerond. Komt dan steeds weer met de zelfde lesjes terug. Bij verschillende lessen wordt gevraagd een keuze te maken uit afbeeldingen die moeilijk te onderscheiden zijn.

I have been using the app for a month now and this is what I have observed:
+ content is really good. It increases difficulty gradually. I’m having already full sentences (and understanding it)
+ good pace, repetition is just right
+ you can adjust to your goals and level
- speech recognition is so bad that it is now permanently turned off. I have put a native speaker talking on app and browser and it couldn’t recognize
- sometimes I want time to read all the sentences before moving to the next exercise but there isn’t such option. If I click pause, I can’t see the exercises. That should be improved. People need time to read and assimilate

The claim that “Rosetta Stone has The Audio Companion – which is designed specifically for hands-free learning, and is available through the Rosetta Stone mobile app” is misleading > Audio Companion requires you to watch pictures, so it’s not possible learn when you are doing an activity (walking, driving, etc).

After using the app for 4 days, I find the content good and an easy way to learn Dutch with a lot of useful sentences. Probably better than the competition.
However there are some things that really annoy me and limiting my learning:
- speech recognition: it doesn’t work well. I might say the exact same thing several times and only then it will be accepted. It annoyed me so much that I had to deactivate mic
- I’m now stuck on a level. I completed it with 100% score but on the home, it keeps showing as not completed so I’m not really able to move on, on that screen
I bought a 1y subscription but if I keep having these issues, I might very well ask cancelation of my subscription within the 30days

App blijft in sommige lessen ‘hangen’ op een iPad ook nadat je alles herhaaldelijk 100% goed hebt afgerond. Komt steeds weer met de zelfde saaie lesjes terug.
Bij verschillende lessen wordt gevraagd een keuze te maken uit afbeeldingen die moeilijk te onderscheiden zijn. Lijkt zo meer op een gokspelletje dan op het leren van een taal.
Het zou beter zijn om een andere taal (Engels?) als tegentaal te kunnen kiezen, (zoals wel kan bij Duolingo of Babbel) maar het is voor de ontwikkelaars blijkbaar onmogelijk om af te wijken van de taal waarop het iOS apparaat is ingesteld.

I can’t select the correct unit from the list. Eg. When I click on unit 2 it opens unit 6.

I met the CEO and he was a super chill guy. He gave me a life time membership. I've been doing russian, and its pretty fun. But the voice recognition is awful. Sometimes it fails me with the simplest task, then registers a passing truck as the correct response. Super frustrating

Ik vind het een leuke cursus. Maar waar ik vooral fouten mee maak, zijn door de kleine foto’s. Soms vind ik het niet duidelijk. Maar ik doe de cursus ook op de telefoon. Verder is het leuk!

This app is a big disappointment. It suggests that you can learn a language also at the highest level (proficient, as they call it), but the level is not challenging at all and keeps rehashing exercises that you have already done in other levels. I bought it to improve my Greek (because I was fed up with Duolingo, especially after their last “improvements”) and get really challenging exercises, e.g. with the past tense of passive verbs etc. and with a lot of new vocabulary but it is one big disappointment. Not to mention that in many exercises you spend more time guessing what they are trying to tell you with their pictures than with actual learning of the language. I would like my money back!

Mostly it is easy to delete an account in the App, but not for this App. It asks you to fill in many things and you even don't know when they will delete your account. Very bad way.
