Pleco Chinese Dictionary

A great app for learning Chinese! It’s very helpful when you forget how to write a character, as it clearly displays the stroke order. The free version offers plenty of features, but the premium upgrade unlocks even more at a reasonable price. Highly recommended!

I use this dictionary all the time and I love it. Installed some free add-ons and that was very problematic, probably the Cantonese add-on. I did not understand the extra pronounciation advice, could not discover the rules, it also looked messy suddenly. After I uninstalled it, and reverted to the original settings, my dictionary could STILL only switch between E and CAN. Had to completely uninstall the Pleco app and reinstall to get to my previously loved Pleco Chinese dictionary.

Best dictionary app for any language. Wide variety of dictionaries, many features etc. Should definitely download it if you’re learning Mandarin or Cantonese.

The Cantonese add-on of this app is problematic.
First, it mixes with the Mandarin expressions, which are not used in Cantonese at all. For example, the pronunciation of ‘tasty’ is given as [hou2 hek3] - but that is only pronouncing the Mandarin Chinese expression in Cantonese, instead of providing the Cantonese expression with its pronunciation as [hou2 sik6].
Second, the pronunciation in Jyutping may not be accurate. For example, ‘eat’ should be [sik6], instead of [si6]. The closing consonant [k] is one main feature present in Cantonese but not Mandarin Chinese.
I suggest the option of offering a cleaner version with only Cantonese to avoid all these confusion. Until that is done, I would like a refund.

It should say for each word to which HSK level it belongs! It would be easier to understand the difficulty of each word/character.

Always surprised when people have not heard of this app yet. Absolute necessity!
Also do yourself a service and buy the most premium package. Can’t think of a better way to spend money!

This is a very good Chinese dictionary that can be used offline. In various ways unknown characters can be looked up. It contains almost everything you would like to know about a character. Some characters however contain less information than others, and don’t even have example sentences. That’s the only thing to improve.

I would buy an iPhone solely to be able to use Pleco. It revolutionized my Chinese language learning. The flashcard system is super detailed, yet also intuitive. The handwriting recognition is excellent, and even just the free dictionary is great by itself.

Erg handige app! Bevat gratis al bijna alle woorden. Maar het kopen van extra woordenboeken maakt het nog completer. Ook erg handige add-ins

Not much else to add. This dictionary is the best hands down. Great support too.

De beste Chinese taal app die ik ken. Gebruik hem dagelijks in Taiwan. Ik gebruik de traditionele karakters.

I have been using Pleco since 2007 and regard it as one of the most important apps I have.
If you are studying Chinese, this application is the best investment in study materials you can make, definitely worth every single euro/dollar/rmb/ntd!
