The Great Courses

I love the content, I loath the way I have to reach it. Especially considering the price!
Apple TV forgets the login every day or two without any easy way to get in. Shame on the person who wrote it this way!
The navigation in the app is tricky, as the focus shifts randomly and discovery is a pain.
The only good thing: it’s easy to continue watching the series. But even there - it at times shows the cycles I have finished.
I hope there content will be moved to a company that can actually serve it right.

thats just one example of the most dumbass mistakes they made building this app

I was familiar with content from The Teaching Company, that lets top educators record indepth lectures to laypeople. They used to sell them on dvd but now there is this app that allows you to stream the content (paid subscription). The only objection to the content is that they can be very long: 24 half-hour lectures is about the minimum for a topic. But they are really fun to watch I assure you!
The app works but there are some improvement opportunities:
- for some videos, the audio desycs halfway through a lecture (iPad 2019)
- you can’t search for all lectures by a specific lecturer
- it remembers where you stopped listening, but that fails every now and then
- downloads are a bit clumsy. I would like to be able to ask it to download a few lectures in advance, without manual intervention
- please also release it for Apple tv!
All in all, it is warmly recommended.

Yesterday I started my trial period. Today I still don’t have a subscription on my account. I had allready send a request for customer support but I haven’t had a reply yet. I would like to actually be able to check your content out before I start my year subscription.

Subtitles do not work when chromecasting content. App does not accurately keep track of watched courses. The subscription does give you access to loads of interesting content.

I just started using the service.
I have to ding them immediately for the FBI $250,000 copyright infringement warning at the start of their videos. Showing a valued customer such notices (which have never stopped actual pirates) is stupid. I hated in the the days of rental video and continue to hate it.
Netflix doesn’t need it, so why do you?

Nergens in de app of op de site kun je zien hoe duur een abonnement is als je gratis proefperiode voorbij is (of hoe lang die gratis periode duurt) tenzij je eerst een proefabonnement neemt, of in de app-store klikt onder het redelijk onzichtbare in-app purchases tabje. In de EU kun je je alleen via de app store abonneren voor €160/jaar. Hoeveel duurder dat is dan elders in de wereld kom je niet te weten. Vanwege de Apple 30% commissie denk ik dat we meer moeten betalen dan in b.v. de VS waar je ook via hun website kunt abonneren; andere apps bieden een vaak goedkoper alternatief aan via een eigen website (b.v. Lifesum, Readdly etc.). Maar de app is er niet eerlijk of open over, waardoor het onmogelijk is om af te wegen wat belangrijker is: het gemak en de privacy van de app-store of een goedkoper abonnement via een andere website.

I love the courses and this review is not about them. They are great quality and worth the money.
I have some major issues with the usability of the application.
1. When you are in the middle of a 24 or 36 lecture course, browsing through new courses is not the first thing I want to do when I open the app. Watching or continuing my next/ current lecture is. So why don't you make it so that I can resume my current course with a single click. Now I need to do three clicks while getting distracted by lots of content I'm not interested in. I want to finish my current course before I browse new content.
2. The Download feature is very useful if you are in the road a lot. But if I want to download say the next 12 lectures of my course the app needs to be open and the screen shot to be on. Isn't there a way to support background downloading?
