Proton Drive: cloudopslag

Ik gebruik Drive al een jaar of vier en het bevalt redelijk al is iCloud drive van Apple nog wat veelomvattender. Toch heb ik die uitgeschakeld en gebruik Proton Drive voor opslag van foto’s en documenten. Het voldoet aan mijn vereisten al kan het inderdaad weleens haperen als ik via 5G en de hotspot van mijn iPhone verbinding maak. Ik werk altijd op een iPad (8th) met de laatste software (26.4.1 momenteel)
Ik weet dat veel documenten offline beschikbaar gemaakt kunnen worden maar dat is niet altijd handig.
Vooral nu ik sinds een poosje Proto Docs gebruik ipv Pages heb ik last van het telkens bevriezen als het programma synced met de Proton server. Dat is zeer irritant. Ik moet dan wachten voor ik verder kan werken of het document sluiten en heropenen.
Ook het niet offline kunnen werken is een gemis.
Ik heb internet via 5G dus weet niet of dat bevriezen met een wifi verbinding ook optreedt.
Laatste puntje: pagina’s nummeren is niet mogelijk in Docs en bij openen gaat het naar het begin van een manuscript ipv naar het eind. Kan daar wat aan gedaan worden?

You don't just get 5GB for nothing. There are conditions attached to it that you have to find yourself. You should clearly state this in the App Store.

In de App Store zeggen jullie gratis 5Gb opslag, dat leek mij wel wat, app geïnstalleerd en werkt goed, snel, duidelijk ook verwijderen gaat snel. Maar ik heb maar Gb opslag ipv de de beloofde 5Gb. Lijkt op misleiding maar kan ook een foutje zijn.
Na een mail gehad te hebben met een paar “links” erachter gekomen dat je 3 kleine acties moet uitvoeren. Dit gedaan en inderdaad nu 5Gb opslag.

I miss the option to save attachments from Proton Mail into Proton Drive, without the need to download it first and upload it than into Proton Drive. Overall I miss smooth interaction between all Proton apps like mail, drive, agenda etc.

I Love it exists, i use it a lot, but the UX is still a bit clunky. A linux client would be appreciated as well.

I’m positive about drive. It’s not at the same level as iCloud or onedrive, and sometimes confusing, but it is improving and it has an excellent helpdesk: fast and friendly.

It’s a nice app but still missing some important features. I’m really missing a sync status. I just started using it and want to backup 10 years of photos from the phone, I’d really like to know how long it will take and how far it is.

What’s the point of having a back up of all your photo’s without all metadata: location details are not available. This sucks: how to find your photo’s when you can’t search on location or countrymap?

I will still use it as I pay for it and want to de-google, but attempting to navigate through my files in my phone is almost impossible

The UI is laggy for some reason. Also, sometimes I tap on a photo, the app says it’s decrypting it, but it just never finishes, and the photo won’t load.

Accidentally downloaded a 100 GB file to iOS device. How to remove it only from local storage?

I really like this app! My only request is that the devs implement the new feature available as of iOS 26.1 to allow photos to backup in the background. Then this app will be perfect for me!

Om mijn foto’s buiten de Amerikaanse cloud te houden, ben ik overgestapt naar Proton Drive. Uiteindelijk bleek het gebruikersgemak daar echter zo laag dat ik besloot de foto’s weer terug te zetten op mijn Mac, zonder optimalisatie van de lokale opslag en met een Time Machine-back-up.
De weg terug was echter ontluisterend moeilijk. Toen ik eindelijk de foto’s weer op mijn computer had, bleken de bestanden onbruikbaar om opnieuw in Apple Foto’s te zetten. Waarschijnlijk moet ik nu alles opnieuw exporteren naar JPEG in hoge kwaliteit. Een echt drama!

Yes, it works. And yes, there is still a lot of work to do and at least, make is possible to sort photo albums by name.
But hey, the most important is: my data is not in the US anymore and stored in a safe way.

Proton Drive not being accessible through the Files app with Face ID enabled cripples many of its main use cases on iPhones. Turning Face ID off also defeats quite a bit of the main purpose IMO. Aside from that, Proton Drive works OK to secure my most important documents. It would however be nice if there’s a vault folder like OneDrive has that adds additional security to a certain folder, especially if people need to resort to reducing the security of the overall app by disabling Face ID to access the app.

Files bigger than a few MB, fail to download. They start and get to 90+% and start at 1% again. Cannot trust it. What good is a cloud drive if you can't get your files from it?
Received a response from support. I did try the larger uploads several times (unsuccessfully), but will do again and send logs asap (in July when I'm back)

The photo backup need some work, it gets randomnly stuck for days, re-starts from the beginning, require the phone to stay unlocked… it is really not handy compared to alternatives.
