iA Writer

I have been using ia Writer for already a few years in my laptop. Now I got the mobile version and works very good. I love the simplicity and the easy sync. There is however a few critical things I really miss, in both apps (mobile and stationary): 1) an outliner to help me navigate through my documents. IA writer has this option for Windows users but for some reason never implemented it for Apple users. 2) a less purist way to visualize tables and formulas. By that I mean that would very helpful to have small renders of tables to work on. Since the app is very strict on using bare text, working with tables is a headache. That’s the few reasons why I end up using IA writer only for short texts, instead of more serious writing drafts.

This app, when used on both iOS and macOS, approaches perfection as the thinking person’s writing environment. To be sure, I have a few feature requests (that the developers are aware of), and some of its capabilities are of no use to me, personally, but it’s clean, fast (iCloud sync, too), and has very few flaws. I abandoned Obsidian and access and edit the hundreds of markdown files from my ‘vault’ in iA Writer now, never missing backlinks and ‘transclusion’ and the rest, and writing a lot more. I wrote a script to copy text as LaTeX for my scientific work. I thoroughly enjoy the iA aesthetic, and love the Duo font face. The new library navigation features are a boon. And having bought my first license over ten years ago, I trust this suite will be around for as long as I’ll be writing. Forget bells and whistles; this machine kills procrastination. Thanks, developers!

Ik hou van deze app. Hij is briljant in zijn eenvoud, doet precies wat je verwacht en is toch verrassend veelzijdig. Een 10.

Op zich een goede app. Maar zoekresultaten kunnen niet gesorteerd worden. Dat is jammer, want als je veel notities hebt dan is het lastig iets terug te vinden. Ik ben verbaasd dat dit nog steeds zo is. Daarnaast werken wikilinks verschillend op MacOS en iOS wat onhandig is. Om deze redenen ben ik een andere app gaan gebruiken op de iPad. Jammer, want op mijn iMac kan IA Writer wel zoekresultaten sorteren en gebruik ik het elke dag.

Wanted to say this update with the swiping between files (the thing a bit like the also quite recent iOS Safari tab update) is a very very good addition. While I’m here, I’ve been thinking I’d personally love to see some kind of internal linking, for like a personal wiki construction be added. With anchors in the same document maybe, but even better would be linking across files. I think I’ve seen it around already. Also because I use it on three different devices, sometimes I have had a sync issue, where it would read an older version that was open on one device as a new one and I have to browse the versions to get my real newest version back. Maybe it’s handy to include some kind of hint like with how Github shows you visually in green or red what’s changed in that version, because so far I just kind of guess, but I sometimes have to do it a couple times. Haven’t had that sync thing in a while, so maybe it’s fixed? Thanks for everything, I use the app every day and I appreciate the work you put into it!

Nog steeds na ruim tien jaar hebben jullie niet gedaan wat je beloofd hebt. De functies ook in het Nederlands beschikbaar maken.

I’ve been using the app for several years now and I’m very happy with it, but maybe it would be handy to have a scroll-to-bottom button, perhaps in this lightning menu you just added. I find myself scrolling a lot in larger files. Thank you for the great app! Edit: Since the last iPadOS update I have this thing where my file with scroll to top randomly, even while I’m typing. Edit: You’re right actually… I’ve started noticing it in other apps now.

Thee keep in improving this app in wonderful ways. Please add support for more languages.

I love the syntax highlighting, but I wish it had that in Dutch too. I'll only buy the Mac version if that gets it too.

iA is perfect to focus, specially for easy distracted people like the ADD/ADHD and high sensitive creative tribe members.

I like all the new features that indeed make the writing experience a lot nicer. Only how to create a footnote remains a mystery to me...

Goed doordacht en veel onder de motorkap. Na vele tekstverwerkers zoals Ulysses,Scrivener en Storyist (wat ook top apps zijn) is dit toch de app waar alles is gefocust op schrijven en toch alle mogelijkheden in zich heeft wat die andere ook bieden.
