HelloChinese - Learn Chinese

I love this app, it is very interactive and clear. Getting quizzed on the story I just read is a amazing learning tool. Very specialized app and incredible content even at the free tier. Well worth upgrading to premium.

So far, so good, but I just got started. Very useful particularly to get the pronunciation right and focussed on learning conversational Chinese, while also adding some learning elements for writing the characters. Nice balance between the two. Focusing too much on the characters would hold back progress in conversational Chinese, omitting them entirely would also not be good. All in all it’s very well done and much better than most language learning apps.

Has many of the features less charm because no chacters and is just as easy to learn with

The depth and breadth of content that HelloChinese offers is really good.
There are many different types of exercise that help you practice the language, and add variety, whilst stretching you further than the simple assembling sentences/picking correct words that you see in other language learning apps.
I particularly like:
- speaking exercises, using the mic and detecting how accurately you can say things (this seems a bit fiddly sometimes, one time you’ll say something that seems to be identical and get a quite different score), but this is great to practice and build confidence
- the native speaker videos - the native speakers speak faster and less clearly than the computer-generated voice, which is good practice
- the stories, graded by difficulty and character content.
I pay for the €130 p.a. premium package and it definitely feels worth it for all the extra content. Combining daily practice in the app with in-person lessons seems like a good recipe for success.

I used to learn Chinese via Duolingo before coming across HelloChinese. In my opinion, HelloChinese provides a far better learning experience since it is tailored specifically to Chinese, and I feel it's just on a whole other level. It also provides much more different formats for learning; for example background information, short stories, native speaker videos, games, etc. on top of a format that is similar to Duolingo.
I really appreciate the huge effort the team behind the app has made, be it the drawings to make it easier to remember characters, be it the fact that (I think) all sentences are spoken by a human and not computer generated, the plethora of native speaker videos, the nice interface, the explanations, and, again, the variety of formats they provide. On that note, I feel that the app interface is very well tailored to language learners. One example is the possibility of hearing your own recording in speaking exercises, that really helps to improve one's pronunciation.
The way the app combines learning via repetition with explanations suits my personal style very well. The insightful explanations don't just concern grammar, but also the meaning behind the characters and how the language is used in every day life (I highly recommend the Teacher Talks). It gives me the feeling of better understanding the language and making sense of it (I love the explanations on the (components of) Chinese characters, that is so helpful!).
I think HelloChinese provides a really nice and holistic learning experience, and I have the impression that it is very well thought through. I love the app and I love learning Chinese with the app! I am grateful to the team behind the app for making it so enjoyable to learn a new language!

Insightful explanations and supports traditional characters. Fun and a great diversity of exercises (speech, writing, characters, handwriting)

Lessen zijn goed onderbouwd en duidelijk te begrijpen. Ook is het erg handig om daadwerkelijke audio van echte mensen tussen door te horen ipv alleen computerstemmen.

If I had this app for French, German and English in high school I would be fluent in all three of them! What an incredible way to learn a language

The variation of questions makes the app very interactive. I found out that after not been using the app for more then 3 years it was rather easy to start with Chinese lessons for the second time.
Also I’ve been surprised quite often of how much I’ve learned in a few days only

Fijne app. Werkt goed om snel een basis te leren. Ik hoop dat er snel een vertaling naar Nederlands komt. Wordt hier aan gewerkt?

I will give this a 5 star review. It is a very good way to learn chinese in general. Minus that I haveve to pay to get to a certain level, I am currently 13 so can’t subscribe myself. I would like to see some widgets that I can add to my home screen to remind me to practice.

I love the app! Im progressing greatly! But I’d really love to learn to write EVERY character we get to learn in a lesson because we only get to learn a selective amount of characters

This app is a fantastic tool to learn, probably of any Chinese app on the market. I do however find it misleading how the app forces you to get a subscription halfway through the course without any warning. Other than that, good app.

Lots of different things to do. The explanations are all in depth and easily accessible as well.

i didn’t try other apps but I did some research and came to this app as choice for learning Chinese. It works great for me. For other languages I use Duolingo, but this one seema better for Chinese.

App is so far the best app I know to learn Chinese. A lot of daily life topics and different ways to learn. You have the basic course, immerse podcast lessons and now also have stories. Its a fun and good way to learn. Thnx!
